Krill Oil: The Best Omega-3 Source You Probably Don't Know About
Share
What is krill – and why should you care?
Krill are tiny marine crustaceans, typically 4.5 to 6 centimeters long, which probably form the largest biomass of all multicellular organisms on Earth. For the production of food supplements, Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is most commonly used – a crustacean living in the clean waters surrounding Antarctica, far from industrial pollution.
The characteristic red color of krill comes from astaxanthin – a carotenoid that, as you will soon see, is one of the most powerful natural antioxidants available.
Krill feed on marine algae rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These acids are stored in their bodies in a specific form – and that is what makes krill oil exceptional.
What krill oil contains – and why form matters
Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) – but different
Krill oil contains 13.8–20.3% EPA and 5.6–17.4% DHA – the same omega-3 fatty acids as fish oil. However, the difference is fundamental: the form in which they are bound.
In fish oil, omega-3s are bound to triglycerides or ethyl esters. In krill oil, they are bound to phospholipids – and that changes everything.
Phospholipids are structurally identical to how omega-3s are present in cell membranes. The body therefore accepts them more naturally and efficiently. Clinically measured bioavailability of krill oil reaches 80%, while for fish oil in triglyceride form it is 59.78% and for ethyl esters only 47.53%.
In practice, this means: krill oil is absorbed 33% better than fish oil and 68% better than omega-3 ethyl esters. So, for the same dose, the body actually gains significantly more.
Astaxanthin – "the king of carotenoids"
Astaxanthin is a natural red pigment from the carotenoid family that gives krill oil its characteristic hue. It is a powerful antioxidant with one extraordinary property: it is approximately 6,000 times stronger than vitamin C in neutralizing free radicals.
In krill oil, it plays a dual role: it protects omega-3s themselves from oxidation (which is why krill oil does not need added antioxidants and naturally lasts longer) and at the same time brings its own extensive health benefits – from skin protection to neuroprotection and fertility support.
Phospholipids and choline – what most omega-3 supplements don't offer
Phospholipids in krill oil constitute approximately 34% as phosphatidylcholine – a compound whose polar head is choline: an essential nutrient that our body cannot produce on its own.
Choline is essential for building cell membranes, forming the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and for the proper function of the liver, heart, and brain. The vast majority of the population has an insufficient intake – and krill oil is one of its most absorbable sources.
Why the average omega-3 index in the Czech Republic is a problem
The average omega-3 index of the Czech population is 3.56%, while the optimal value for health is 8% or more. In other words: a large part of us has a chronic omega-3 deficiency – and its impacts are far-reaching.
Omega-3s are essential nutrients that the body cannot synthesize on its own, and their deficiency manifests in brain and nervous system function, cardiovascular system quality, the degree of inflammation in the body, and the rate of aging. Taking them in a form that is actually absorbed is not a minor detail. It is fundamental.
What krill oil actually does: scientifically backed benefits
❤️ Heart and blood vessels
Clinical studies have repeatedly shown that krill oil increases HDL cholesterol, lowers LDL, and reduces triglycerides – three key markers of cardiovascular health. EPA supports blood flow and contributes to reducing the risk of arrhythmias and blood pressure.
🔥 Anti-inflammatory effect stronger than fish oil
The combination of omega-3 and astaxanthin creates a synergistic anti-inflammatory effect that directly outperforms fish oil. A study showed that 1,000 mg of krill oil daily reduced inflammatory markers more effectively than 2,000 mg of omega-3 from fish. Krill oil also more effectively reduces the omega-6/omega-3 ratio – a high ratio of these fatty acids is now considered one of the main contributors to chronic inflammation in the body.
🦴 Joint pain: results in just one week
One of the most convincing pieces of evidence for krill oil comes from studies focusing on osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. At a dose of 300 mg daily for one week, perceived pain decreased by an average of 19.3%, and CRP levels – an indicator of inflammation – dropped by almost 30%. In the placebo control group, both pain and CRP worsened.
🌸 PMS and menstrual pain
For women suffering from premenstrual syndrome or dysmenorrhea, krill oil offers a scientifically backed alternative. Studies have shown that regular use alleviates both physical and psychological symptoms of PMS – and krill oil users experienced a significantly greater reduction in analgesic consumption than the group using fish oil.
🧠 Brain, mood, and depression
DHA is a structural component of brain cell membranes – and the phospholipid form of krill oil allows for its more efficient incorporation into these membranes than triglycerides from fish oil. Omega-3s combined with antidepressants increase treatment effectiveness and reduce side effects. Krill oil is also demonstrably more effective in reducing cardiovascular risks in depressed patients – which is important because this group is at a significantly higher risk of heart disease than the average population.
👁️ Eyes
Astaxanthin is among the most well-documented substances for eye health. A clinical study showed an improvement in accommodative amplitude of 21.7% after just 4 weeks of taking 5 mg of astaxanthin daily. It reduces eye strain from screens and supports overall visual function.
🌞 Skin
Astaxanthin protects the skin from UV damage, slows down the skin aging process, increases elasticity, and promotes hydration. In combination with omega-3s, which regulate the production of inflammatory cytokines affecting skin quality, krill oil offers comprehensive internal support for healthy and radiant skin.
💪 Athletic performance
Omega-3s in phospholipid form support muscle growth, improve muscle function, and accelerate recovery after physical exertion. Endurance athletes may also appreciate the proven improvement in lung function and VO2max values.
Astaxanthin: an epigenetic player
Astaxanthin goes beyond the role of a common antioxidant. Science today documents its epigenetic effects – the ability to influence gene expression, DNA methylation, and histone modification. This means that it does not only act reactively (by neutralizing free radicals) but actively influences how cells function at the level of genetic regulation.
Its proven effects include protection against oxidative DNA damage, inhibition of pro-inflammatory NF-κB and COX-2 pathways, support for mitochondrial energy production, and a beneficial effect on the balance of the gut microbiome.

Krill oil naturally complements:
Vitamin D3 – synergistic effect with omega-3 for immunity, bones, and mood. Curcumin – strengthens anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Coenzyme Q10 – supports mitochondria and cardiovascular health. Vitamin K2 – in combination with D3 for bone and vessel protection. Rosemary – added neuroprotection and antioxidant support.
Important notice
Omega-3 fatty acids and krill oil can affect blood clotting. Individuals with bleeding disorders, those taking warfarin or other blood thinners, should consult their doctor before starting krill oil. The same applies to doses above 2 g of omega-3 or 1 g of krill oil daily.
Krill oil is not suitable for individuals with allergies to fish or seafood, for children under 3 years of age, and for pregnant and breastfeeding women (consult a doctor).
Always check the composition and source when purchasing – there are fakes on the market enriched with soy phospholipids or soy oil. Buy only from trusted sellers.
Small crustacean, big difference
Omega-3s are one of the most important nutrients known to modern science. But their value depends on whether they actually get where they need to go – into cell membranes, into the brain, into the heart, into the skin.
Krill oil overcomes this barrier better than any other omega-3 source: thanks to its phospholipid form, natural astaxanthin, and choline content. Esthe Pro Labo Krill Oil Gran Pro makes this potential accessible in a premium, pure, and scientifically backed form.
Because true beauty and health begin within – and at the cellular level.
